El Santuario de Regla

During the storms of 1895, the waves caused various erosions in the coast at the foot of the Monastery of Regla. The consequences of those erosions gave to the discovery of various quadrangular tombs, in those were discovered skeletons, money, glass's and other Roman objects of interest.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Regla dates to the XIV century, and was constructed on top of the foundation of the fortress of the Ponce de León's. It was abandoned from the alienation of Mendizábal until the year 1882, when by the help of the Duke of Montpensier, a community of Franciscan missionary's were installed in the ruins of the monastery.

Ntra. Sra. de Regla

Some of the primitive architecture that is conserved are the walls of the cloister, restored in the XVII century and a precious ajimez formed by two arch's of ojiva. Also from this epoch is a pedestal decorated by tiles from Triana.

According to legend the image of Our lady of Regla arrived in Chipiona in the V century. Some believe it was sculptured in the epoch of the apostles, and was the work of the evangelist San Lucar. San Pablo then delivered it to San Timoteo and with the passing of the century's ended in the hands of San Agustín. Others consider it a work of sculptors from Tagaste for San Agustín to have in his oratory. The dark color of her face comes from the earthly colors in various layers of plaster. The skullcap on her head and the Hieratic attitude that is produced by the curving of the eyebrows, eyes and mouth has helped to form the legend that brings together this image with Egyptian art with profound oriental influence.
